Affordable Tesla Incoming? Creta-Sized Electric SUV Could Be a Total Game-Changer

Tesla is developing a Creta-sized affordable electric SUV with up to 600 km range. Expected by 2030, it could be a game-changer for India’s EV market.

After years of rumors and speculation, Tesla has finally begun developing an electric vehicle that could be a perfect fit for markets like India.

Tesla’s New Budget EV SUV in the Works: A Perfect Fit for India?

After years of thinking about launching a more affordable electric car, Tesla finally seems ready to take action. The company is now working on a new compact electric SUV, expected to be smaller and more affordable than the Tesla Model 3.

Creta-Sized Tesla SUV Coming Soon

According to a recent report by Reuters, Tesla is developing a new SUV that will measure around 4.28 metres in length. This puts it in the same size category as the Hyundai Creta Electric.

Interestingly, this new SUV will sit two segments below the Tesla Model Y, placing it in the global B-segment. While Tesla will still miss out on the highly competitive C-segment globally, this smaller SUV could be a perfect match for markets like India.

Strong Competition in India

If Tesla launches this EV in India, it will compete in the mid-size SUV segment against popular upcoming and existing electric SUVs like:

  • Tata Sierra.ev
  • Mahindra BE 6
  • Honda 0 Alpha
  • Maruti e Vitara
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella

This shows how competitive the segment is getting, especially in India.

Tesla is planning something exciting here. The new SUV could be offered in:

  • A regular manual driving version
  • A fully autonomous version

The autonomous model could help Tesla expand its robotaxi services, especially in markets like North America and Europe.

Focus on Affordability

To keep costs low, Tesla may:

  • Use a smaller battery than the Model Y
  • Offer single-motor (2WD) setups
  • Target a weight of around 1.5 tonnes, similar to the Creta Electric

All these changes clearly show Tesla is aiming to make this EV more affordable and practical.

Expected Range & Launch Timeline

There’s no official range yet, but Tesla is known for strong performance. So, the expected range could be around 600 km (WLTP), which is quite impressive.

Also, WLTP figures are more realistic compared to India’s MIDC cycle.

As for launch:

  • The SUV is still in early development
  • Global launch expected between 2028 and 2030

Production & India Plans

Tesla plans to manufacture this SUV:

  • First in China
  • Then in Europe and the U.S.

India could also be on the list in the future, especially if Tesla decides to localise production.

Current Situation in India

Right now, Tesla only sells the Tesla Model Y in India. It is imported as a CBU from China and starts at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). However, it hasn’t seen strong demand due to its high price.
