Maruti Suzuki achieves its highest-ever rail dispatch in 2025 with 5.85 lakh vehicles, cutting emissions and fuel use while strengthening green logistics in India.
Maruti Suzuki Sets a New Benchmark in Green Logistics With Record Rail Dispatches in 2025
Maruti Suzuki has once again proved why it is not just Indiaโs largest carmaker, but also one of the most forward-thinking and sustainability-focused automotive companies in the country. In calendar year 2025, Maruti Suzuki India Limited achieved its highest-ever rail-based vehicle dispatch, transporting over 5.85 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways.
This milestone is more than just a big number. It marks an 18 per cent growth compared to CY 2024 and highlights Maruti Suzukiโs strong commitment to green logistics, lower emissions, and smarter transportation solutions. Simply put, the company is moving more cars than ever before while putting less pressure on roads and the environment.
A Decade of Transformation: From Roads to Railways
To truly understand how big this achievement is, it helps to look back. In CY 2016, Maruti Suzuki transported only about 77,000 vehicles by rail, which accounted for just 5.1 per cent of its total vehicle dispatches. At that time, road transport was still the dominant mode for moving cars across India.
Fast forward to CY 2025, and the picture looks completely different. Rail transport now accounts for around 26 per cent of Maruti Suzukiโs total vehicle movement. Thatโs a more than 7.5 times jump in rail dispatch volumes over less than a decade.
This steady shift clearly shows how the company has reworked its logistics strategy, choosing railways as a cleaner, more efficient, and more reliable option for long-distance vehicle transportation.

Rapid Growth Since 2021 Shows Strong Momentum
While rail dispatches have been rising for years, the growth since 2021 has been especially impressive. Hereโs how the numbers stack up:
- CY 2021: 2.22 lakh vehicles
- CY 2022: 3.20 lakh vehicles
- CY 2023: 4.22 lakh vehicles
- CY 2024: 4.96 lakh vehicles
- CY 2025: Over 5.85 lakh vehicles
This sharp upward curve reflects two key things. First, Maruti Suzukiโs expanding production capacity as demand for its cars continues to grow. Second, the companyโs increasing confidence in rail transport as a dependable logistics backbone.
For a country as vast as India, where moving vehicles across states can be challenging, railways offer consistency, scale, and long-term cost efficiency.
Big Environmental Wins: Lower Emissions, Less Fuel Use
One of the biggest benefits of rail-based vehicle movement is its positive environmental impact, and Maruti Suzukiโs 2025 performance highlights this clearly.
By choosing rail over road transport during CY 2025, the company managed to:
- Avoid 87,904 metric tonnes of CO2e emissions
- Save over 687 lakh litres (68.7 million litres) of fuel
These numbers directly translate to lower carbon emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and less traffic congestion on highways. In simple terms, fewer trucks on the road mean cleaner air, safer highways, and smoother logistics operations.
At a time when sustainability is becoming a key focus for industries worldwide, Maruti Suzukiโs efforts stand out as a real, measurable contribution, not just a promise on paper.
A First-Mover Advantage in Rail Logistics
Maruti Suzukiโs strong rail logistics network didnโt come together overnight. The company has been investing in this area for more than a decade. In 2013, it became Indiaโs first automaker to receive an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence.
This early move gave Maruti Suzuki greater control and flexibility over its rail-based logistics operations. Since FY 2014โ15, the company has transported more than 28 lakh vehicles by rail, reaching over 600 cities across the country.
The entire operation runs on a hub-and-spoke distribution model, which allows vehicles to be moved efficiently from manufacturing plants to multiple regional hubs and then onward to dealerships.

High-Capacity Flexi-Deck Rakes Power the Network
To support such large-scale rail movement, Maruti Suzuki currently operates over 45 flexi-deck rakes. Each of these specially designed rakes can carry around 260 vehicles in a single trip, making them extremely efficient for bulk transportation.
This setup allows the company to move a high volume of vehicles while optimising space, time, and fuel usage. It also ensures faster deliveries to dealerships, helping reduce waiting periods for customers.
In CY 2025, about 53 per cent of Maruti Suzukiโs total rail dispatches originated directly from in-plant railway sidings located at its Gujarat and Manesar manufacturing facilities. This direct plant-to-rail connectivity further cuts down handling time and emissions.

Landmark Achievements in 2025
The year 2025 was special for Maruti Suzuki not just because of record numbers, but also due to two historic milestones in green logistics.
Commenting on the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said that 2025 marked the companyโs highest-ever rail dispatch with over 5.85 lakh units.
He highlighted two standout moments:
- The inauguration of Indiaโs largest automobile in-plant railway siding at the Manesar facility
- The first-ever rail dispatch of vehicles to the Kashmir Valley, passing through the worldโs highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River
This historic movement to Kashmir was a first for any automobile manufacturer in India and symbolised how far rail logistics has come in connecting even the most challenging regions.
What This Means for Indiaโs Auto Industry
Maruti Suzukiโs record-breaking rail dispatches send a strong message to the rest of the auto industry. Sustainable logistics is not just good for the environmentโit also makes business sense.
With rising fuel costs, tighter emission norms, and growing pressure on road infrastructure, rail transport offers a smart long-term solution. Other automakers are likely to follow Maruti Suzukiโs lead, investing more in rail-based logistics over the coming years.

Final Thoughts
Maruti Suzukiโs achievement of over 5.85 lakh rail-dispatched vehicles in CY 2025 is a clear example of how scale, planning, and sustainability can work together. The company has shown that itโs possible to grow big while still reducing environmental impact.
As Indiaโs automotive market continues to expand, initiatives like these will play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner, greener, and more efficient future for mobility.
