Domestic carmakers dominate India’s January 2026 sales chart. Tata Nexon tops the list, followed by Punch, Creta, Brezza, Scorpio and Sonet.
Indian Carmakers Lead New Car Sales in January 2026
Indian car brands had a strong start to 2026. Domestic manufacturers dominated the new car sales chart in January, with Tata Motors taking the top position. SUVs continued to be the most preferred choice for buyers, especially compact and mid-size models.

A total of 1,57,416 cars from the top 10 models were sold in January 2026. This is a 28.49 percent increase compared to 1,22,513 uni sold in January 2025. Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra together made up most of the list, showing the growing trust in Indian carmakers.
Tata Nexon Becomes India’s Best-Selling Car
The Tata Nexon was the highest-selling car in India in January23,365 units of the Nexon during the month. This was a big jump from 15,39 sold in January 2025, showing a strong 51.75 percent year-on-year growth.
The Nexon was already one of India’s best-selling cars last year, and its demand has increased further. One major reason for its success is the wide choice of engines. Buyers can choose from petrol, diesel, CNG and electric versions. Its good safety rating, comfortable ride and regular updates have also helped it stay popular.
Tata Punch Continues Strong Performance
ITata Punch, with 19,257 units sol16,231 units sold in January last year, giving it a growth of 18.64 percent.
The Punch is popular among buyers who want a small car with an SUV-like look. It offers high ground clearance and a strong body. Like the Nexon, it is available in petrol, CNG and electric versions, making it suitable for different types of buyers.
Hyundai Creta Slips to Third Spot
The Hyundai Creta took the third position with 17,921 units sold in January 2026. This is slightly lower than the 18,522 units sold in January 2025. As a result, the Creta saw a small decline of 3.24 percent.
Even with this drop, the Creta remains one of India’s most popular mid-size SUVs. Buyers continue to like it for its premium interior, smooth engine options and comfortable driving experience. However, tough competition from newer SUVs has affected its monthly sales.
Maruti Brezza Records Healthy Growth
#Maruti Brezza ranked fourth on the sales chart with 17,486 units sold in January 2026. This is up from 14,747 units sold in January 2025, showing a growth of 18.57 percent.
The Brezza remains a trusted choice for Indian families. It offers good mileage, low maintenance costs and Maruti Suzuki’s wide service network. The availability of petrol and CNG options has also helped boost its sales.
Mahindra Scorpio Maintains Stable Sales
In fifth place was the Mahindra Scorpio, including both the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio-N. Mahindra sold 15,542 u in January 2026, which is only 100 un than January last year.
Although the growth was small, the Scorpio remains very popular, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. Buyers value its strong road presence, tough build quality and ability to handle rough roads.
Maruti Victoris Gets a Good Start
The Maruti Victoris was the sixth-highest-selling car in January 2026. Maruti Suzuki sold 15,240 uni of this new mid-size SUV.
The Victoris is placed below the Grand Vitara and targets family buyers. Its stylish design, comfortable cabin and competitive pricing have helped it gain quick acceptance in the market.

Fronx and Venue Show Mixed Results
The Maruti Fronx stood seventh with 13,353 units sold. Sales were lower than January 2025, when 15,192 units were sold. This means a 12.11 percent drop.
The Hyundai Venue finished eighth with 12,413 units sold. Compared to 11,106 units last year, the Venue recorded a growth of 11.77 percent, helped by its recent design update and improved features.
Bolero and Sonet Complete the Top 10
In ninth position was the Mahindra Bolero, with 11,841 units sold. Sales increased by 36.39 percent compared to January 2025, showing its continued popularity in rural markets.
The Kia Sonet ranked tenth with 10,998 units sold. It saw a strong 52.88 percent growth, making it one of the fastest-growing cars in January 2026.
