Maruti Suzuki Tops India Car Sales in 2025, Mahindra Finishes 2nd Ahead of Tata & Hyundai
India’s car market saw a big change in 2025. As per Vahan registration data, Maruti Suzuki stayed at the number one position, while Mahindra & Mahindra surprised everyone by finishing second, ahead of Tata Motors and Hyundai.
This is the first time Mahindra has ended a full year ahead of Tata and Hyundai, making 2025 a very important year for the brand.
Maruti Suzuki Remains No.1 in India
Maruti Suzuki once again proved why it is India’s biggest carmaker. Based on registrations till December 25, 2025, Maruti sold around 17.50 lakh cars, far more than any other company.
Maruti’s success comes from its wide range of cars – from small hatchbacks to sedans, MPVs and SUVs. Popular models like Swift, WagonR, Baleno, Brezza, Dzire and Ertiga continue to sell well in both cities and small towns.
Why Maruti stays on top:
- Affordable pricing
- Good fuel efficiency
- Strong service network
- High trust among buyers
Mahindra’s Strong SUV Line-up Drives Growth
Mahindra’s jump to second place is mainly because of its popular SUVs. From January to November 2025, Mahindra registered 5,74,657 vehicles, which is a big rise compared to 4.90 lakh units in 2024. This means Mahindra grew by around 18 per cent in one year.
Most of Mahindra’s sales came from just a few strong models.

Scorpio Is Mahindra’s Best-Selling Model
The Mahindra Scorpio range was the brand’s biggest seller in 2025. It recorded 1.61 lakh units in the first eleven months of the year.
This means more than 25 per cent of Mahindra’s total sales came from the Scorpio alone. Its tough design, strong road presence and reliability keep it popular, especially in non-metro areas.
Thar Continues to Be a Huge Hit
The Mahindra Thar is no longer just an off-road SUV. In 2025, it sold 1.07 lakh units, which is a very strong number for a lifestyle vehicle.
The Thar has become popular among young buyers who want a stylish and powerful SUV with a strong brand image.

Bolero Still Plays a Key Role
The Mahindra Bolero may look old, but it is still very important for the company. With 93,436 units sold, it continues to do well in rural and semi-urban areas.
Its low maintenance cost and tough build make it a trusted choice.
XUV 3XO and XUV700 Add Good Numbers
Mahindra’s smaller SUV, the XUV 3XO, sold 90,608 units, showing that the company is doing well in the compact SUV segment too.
The XUV700, Mahindra’s premium SUV, added 80,251 units. While its sales have slowed compared to its launch period, it still remains an important model.

- XUV400 EV sold 2,764 units
Mahindra is expected to focus more on EVs in the coming years.
The Marazzo MPV saw very low demand, with only 328 units sold.
Tata Motors and Hyundai Very Close Behind
The fight for third place was very close in 2025.
- Tata Motors is expected to finish with around 5.52 lakh units

The small gap shows how tough competition has become in the Indian car market.
