Maruti Suzuki’s strong rail logistics network didn’t come together overnight. The company has been investing in this area for more than a decade. In 2013, it became India’s first automaker to receive an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence.
This early move gave Maruti Suzuki greater control and flexibility over its rail-based logistics operations. Since FY 2014–15, the company has transported more than 28 lakh vehicles by rail, reaching over 600 cities across the country.
The entire operation runs on a hub-and-spoke distribution model, which allows vehicles to be moved efficiently from manufacturing plants to multiple regional hubs and then onward to dealerships.
High-Capacity Flexi-Deck Rakes Power the Network
To support such large-scale rail movement, Maruti Suzuki currently operates over 45 flexi-deck rakes. Each of these specially designed rakes can carry around 260 vehicles in a single trip, making them extremely efficient for bulk transportation.
This setup allows the company to move a high volume of vehicles while optimising space, time, and fuel usage. It also ensures faster deliveries to dealerships, helping reduce waiting periods for customers.
In CY 2025, about 53 per cent of Maruti Suzuki’s total rail dispatches originated directly from in-plant railway sidings located at its Gujarat and Manesar manufacturing facilities. This direct plant-to-rail connectivity further cuts down handling time and emissions.
